The Menarche, Menstruation, Menopause and Mental Health (4M) consortium was established in 2021, led by Dr Gemma Sharp, with funding from the GW4 Alliance.
It’s a network to facilitate collaborative interdisciplinary research into how menstruation and menopause interacts with mental health.
4M brings together researchers from different institutions and disciplines to:
1) work with external stakeholders to identify the most important research questions;
2) share interdisciplinary expertise to design and conduct research to address these questions.
In 2021, we held a series of highly generative workshops between academics and stakeholders in which we identified key research questions and discussed approaches to address them. We have since developed and submitted four interdisciplinary grant applications, and have plans for more activities and funding applications in 2023 and beyond.
The consortium has grown to include academics from other institutions outside the GW4. We have also given invited talks (e.g. to the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and the Royal College of Psychiatrists) about 4M and our approach.
In 2023, we launched a seminar series to help maintain our momentum and develop the network further. We aim to develop our reputation as a community of experts in menstrual and mental health.
